Celebrating Pride and Black Liberation: A Call to Allyship

Jun 01, 2024

This June, we celebrate the richness of identities that strengthen our community, from LGBTQI+ Pride Month to Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. June offers a powerful opportunity to reflect and celebrate progress in the ongoing fight for equality and justice.

As champions of workplace inclusion, courageous and compassionate leaders are those who are continuously improving. Continuous improvement calls for reflecting on being a better ally. Improvement begins by acknowledging the Celebration of Pride Month as intersectional - recognizing the deep connection between LGBTQI+ Pride, and Black American liberation.

As a cisgender Afro-Latina mother, I dream of a world where my children – and all children – can thrive in an environment of acceptance and understanding. I believe that bringing our authentic selves to work is the first step toward building a truly inclusive workplace. By fostering a culture of lifelong learning and amplifying marginalized voices, we can all contribute to positive change in our communities.

As a Human Resources (HR) and Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) consultant,#coachdoramendez, I partner with executives, managers, and small business owners to drive inclusive workplace strategies. A workplace culture where everyone feels valued and respected improves problem-solving, collaboration, productivity, and decision-making for maximum impact!

This June, let's celebrate the LGBTQI+ community and the legacy of Juneteenth by becoming active allies. Here are a few ways we can be better allies:

  • Continue learning & improving: Educate yourself by taking time to learn about the history and ongoing struggles of the LGBTQI+ and Black communities. Research: How to be a Better Ally to the LGBTQI+ Community.

  • Celebrate Pride and Juneteenth: Attend local Pride events or Juneteenth celebrations. Take time for joy!

  • Speak Up: If you witness discrimination or bias, don't be a bystander. Speak up and challenge harmful stereotypes. Research: How to be a Better Ally to your Black Colleagues.

  • Amplify Diverse Voices: Seek to support businesses and organizations owned and operated by LGBTQI+ and Black individuals. Resource: Small Business Association (SBA) Minority-Owned Business to find local directory.
