Adaptability, People Strategy, and the Work of Leading Through Change

July 13, 20269 min read

Opening Reflection

Summer often gives leaders a chance to step back and notice what the pace of the year may have made difficult to see.

By midyear, many organizations are no longer measuring progress against the goals they set in January. Instead, they're responding to new technologies, shifting employee expectations, budget realities, leadership transitions, and the ongoing challenge of keeping people engaged while work itself continues to evolve.

In conversations with executives, nonprofit leaders, entrepreneurs, HR professionals, and career changers, one theme keeps resurfacing: adaptability.

Not as another workplace buzzword, and not as a demand to constantly reinvent ourselves.

As a leadership practice.

Adaptability asks us to remain curious. To keep learning. To notice how people experience change instead of assuming everyone moves through it the same way.

When organizations are growing, restructuring, or introducing new technologies, the people side of the strategy cannot become an afterthought. Culture, communication, leadership development, and trust ultimately determine whether change becomes sustainable or simply exhausting.

That perspective shapes everything I do as a Fractional CHRO, speaker, leadership coach, and host of Building Leadership Community. Whether I'm advising an executive team, coaching an individual leader, facilitating a workshop, or creating content for YouTube, the work is connected by one question:

How do we help people and organizations create value with greater clarity, confidence, and care?

Coach Dora Mendez delivers a keynote on stage in front of a large presentation screen displaying her name and the title "Unidos: Celebrating Latinx Heritage in Leadership."

What I’m Seeing Across Organizations

One thing I've noticed recently is that organizations rarely begin by saying they need a Fractional CHRO.

Instead, they describe what's happening around them.

A leadership team has grown faster than its communication practices. A nonprofit is preparing for its next stage of growth but wants to preserve the culture that made the organization successful in the first place. A founder is carrying every people-related decision alone. An executive team is exploring AI but isn't sure how to help employees navigate the transition with confidence. Managers are feeling stretched, workplace expectations are shifting, and leaders are trying to balance today's demands while preparing for tomorrow's opportunities.

Different organizations. Different circumstances.

The underlying challenge is often the same.

They're trying to strengthen the connection between people, leadership, and strategy before small points of friction become larger organizational obstacles.

That's where thoughtful people strategy becomes so valuable. It isn't about adding another initiative or introducing more complexity. It's about helping leaders make clearer decisions, strengthen culture, develop their people, and build organizations that remain healthy as they grow.

One question I find myself asking leaders more and more is:

"What conversation are you avoiding because it feels uncomfortable?"

More often than not, that's where meaningful progress begins.

One of the things I value most about serving as a Fractional CHRO is that no two organizations require exactly the same approach. Sometimes the work begins with leadership development. Other times it's helping a growing nonprofit preserve its culture, guiding an executive team through organizational change, strengthening communication, preparing managers for expanded responsibilities, or helping leaders adopt AI thoughtfully without losing sight of the people behind the work.

The common thread is never simply HR.

It's creating alignment between people strategy and organizational strategy so leaders can move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.

If you're reading this and recognizing some of your own organization's challenges, it may be worth exploring whether a Fractional CHRO partnership is the right next step. You don't have to wait until people challenges become organizational crises. Often, the most valuable work happens before that point, when leaders have the opportunity to step back, ask better questions, and build a stronger foundation for what's ahead.

If you'd like to learn more about how I partner with organizations, I invite you to explore my Fractional CHRO Services. And if you're wondering whether this type of support is the right fit for your team, I'd be happy to start with a conversation.

Career Clarity in a Changing Workplace

The same questions I hear inside executive meetings often appear in conversations with individual professionals.

  • How do I stay relevant?

  • How do I communicate my value?

  • How do I prepare for opportunities that didn't exist a few years ago?

Those conversations inspired Career Clarity Mondays, my weekly YouTube series.

Every episode is designed to help professionals navigate career transitions, leadership growth, interviews, workplace communication, and the thoughtful use of AI. Whether you're leading a team or managing your own career, my hope is that these conversations leave you feeling a little more confident and a little more prepared for what's next.

This month, our YouTube community reached an exciting milestone: more than 30,000 views. I'm deeply grateful to every student, emerging leader, HR professional, executive, and lifelong learner who has spent a few minutes learning alongside me.

From the Speaking Stage

One of my professional highlights this year was speaking at DisruptHR DC, where leaders come together to challenge conventional thinking about the future of work.

My presentation, "STOP! Stop Calling It a Skills Gap," explores why today's workforce challenges deserve more thoughtful conversations about leadership, learning, opportunity, and organizational culture.

Those ideas didn't end when I walked off the stage. They're the same conversations I continue to have with executive teams, nonprofit leaders, and organizations working to navigate change while keeping people at the center of their strategy.

I'm delighted that the presentation is now available to watch on my website, and I hope you'll take a few minutes to join the conversation.

Practical Resources for the Months Ahead

Learning doesn't always require a major investment of time. Sometimes it starts with one better question or one practical tool.

If you're looking for resources to support your leadership or career development this summer, two of my favorites are available free on my website.

AI Leadership Communication Hacks explores practical ways leaders can use AI to prepare for conversations, meetings, coaching discussions, and decision-making.

Top 5 AI Interview Prompts helps professionals prepare for interviews with greater clarity and confidence.

Neither resource is intended to replace your judgment. They're designed to strengthen it.

A Summer Challenge

Before Labor Day, I invite you to choose one practical learning goal. It does not need to be dramatic. It simply needs to move you forward.

You might complete one AI training module, learn one new AI workflow, use AI to improve a process you repeat often, teach a new skill to a colleague, earn a certification, volunteer for a leadership opportunity, apply for the next role, or begin developing the business idea you have been carrying quietly for some time.

There are strong free learning resources available through

The point is not to become an expert overnight. The point is to begin building familiarity and confidence so that change feels less overwhelming and more usable.

Small experiments often create the conditions for larger breakthroughs.

Leadership Doesn't Have to Be Lonely

One of the reasons I continue producing Building Leadership Community is because I believe leadership can sometimes feel isolating.

But it doesn't have to be...

Every conversation reminds me that healthy workplaces aren't created by accident. They're built through trust, curiosity, honest dialogue, and leaders who are willing to keep learning alongside the people they serve.

If you're catching up this summer, I hope you'll spend some time with the recent conversations. I think you'll find ideas that stay with you long after each episode ends.

Whether you're planning programming for an organization, Employee Resource Group, nonprofit, educational institution, or leadership team, I would welcome the opportunity to explore how we can create a meaningful experience for your audience.

Because meaningful leadership, belonging, and inclusion should never begin and end with a single month on the calendar.

Let’s Start the Conversation ◀️

Community Moment

One of my own learning experiences this summer has been participating in the Lower Hudson Valley Small Business Development Center Accelerator Program.

Over the past several weeks, I've been refining my business strategy, building a pitch deck, and preparing to present the vision for Coach Dora LLC.

The experience has reminded me that clarity is something we continue practicing, regardless of where we are in our careers.

Whether someone is preparing for an interview, leading an organization, launching a new initiative, or building a business, the question is often remarkably similar:

Can you clearly communicate the value you create?

That's a question I've been asking myself alongside the leaders and organizations I have the privilege of serving.

I think that's one of the reasons I continue to love this work. We're all learning. We're all growing. And we're all being invited to become a little clearer about the impact we hope to make.

Closing Reflection

The second half of the year will ask all of us to make thoughtful decisions.

Some will involve technology. Others will involve budgets, staffing, or strategy. But beneath every one of those decisions are people.

AI may accelerate our work. It cannot replace our judgment, our empathy, or our ability to build trust. Those remain deeply human responsibilities.

As you move through the rest of the summer, I hope you'll take a moment to ask yourself a few simple questions.

  • What are you learning?

  • Where is your leadership being stretched?

  • What value are you creating for the people and communities you serve?

Thank you for being part of this community. I look forward to reconnecting with you in September.

With gratitude,

Coach Dora Mendez
